The People of Whitfield Hall
John Allgrove grew up in the Blue Mountains. His parents emigrated from
England and his mother ran a guesthouse, first at Whitfield Hall and later at
nearby Torre Garda. She led tours on horseback across Jamaica and from
Kingston to Blue Mountain Peak. John eventually leased and then purchased
Whitfield Hall. After he married Sheila Maureen Lumsden, a beautiful young
Jamaican woman, they worked on Whitfield together -- even spending part of their
honeymoon painting the roof! For John and Maureen, Whitfield Hall continues to
be a labour of love, and today their farm produces some of the most highly
regarded Blue Mountain coffee grown in Jamaica. In addition to running Whitfield,
John is a civil engineer and is the manager of a consulting engineering firm and
Maureen is director of an office at the University of the West Indies. They have
three children, Zickie, Tanya, and Deanne, and two grandchildren.

Lynette Harriott is the matriarch of an extended family which
helps run Whitfield Hall’s coffee farm and lodging. Lynette
manages the house, cooks meals, and makes a mean cup of
home grown coffee. She is an indispensable part of the Whitfield
Hall family, just like her mother Miss Cynthia used to be.
Lynette’s brother, Roydel Sutherland, manages the coffee farm.
Roydel is also one of the people who ferries travellers from
Kingston or Mavis Bank to Whitfield Hall in a 4-wheel drive vehicle
(a Land Rover).
Claude Willis (called "Loxly" or "Tiger"), one of Miss Lynette’s
sons, helps with the coffee crop and plays an important role at
Whitfield. He sometimes acts as a guide for guests to the Peak.
He cooks good meals, just like his mother, and oversees the
house at night.
Vincent Edwards (called "Vinny") grew up with John Allgrove in
the Blue Mountains and keeps Whitfield Hall functioning. It’s
Vinny who makes sure there’s firewood when it’s cold outside;
that there’s hot tea and coffee in the mornings; and that the Tilley
lamps are lit when it grows dark. Vinny also helps arrange guides
for hikers to Blue Mountain Peak.
Wilbert Jackson also plays an important role on the farm. He is
especially good at keeping our Land Rovers in good shape so
they can get up and down the steep mountain roads safely.
Winston Hedaad (Chippe) like Vinny and Loxly lives on site and
shares duties with Vinny and Loxly. He recently helped paint one
of the bedrooms and did a terrific job.
John and Maureen look forward to seeing you in the mountains!
